There are many award and recognition systems and they all serve their intended purpose.
The British Honours system recognizes and rewards:
Contributors (financial or otherwise) to a political party; elevation to a senior position in a defined profession (medicine, public services etc.); popularly acclaimed excellence in sport, theatre etc.
The Noble system gives awards in a few defined areas such as economics, medicine, literature etc. The award is often for the excellence of research in advancing the field.
Unlike these other recognition systems the XARC awards are only given if a contribution has had a major and large scale impact on humanity as a whole. Research in a science may be very significant but it can be years before that research has a major impact.
The XARC awards are given for a major positive impact on humanity as a whole.
The first XARC award is being given to the founder, designer, inventor of the Internet. This is Tim Berners Lee. There is no doubt that the Internet has already had a major impact even if its potential is not yet fully realized.
Receivers of the award are entitled to put XARC either before or after their name.
The award is purely recognition. The only monetary award is one US dollar.
People are invited to submit names of those who might merit the award. There also needs to be an indication of how the achievement impacts humanity.
Meritorious work or even saintliness of behaviour does not itself qualify for a XARC award. It could be argued that the example of such behaviour is a major contribution. In general, this would not be sufficient.
The donation of large sums of money to worthwhile causes is also not a sufficient qualification.
The award may be given to a team or an institution if the work is the result of a genuine joint effort. The contribution must, however, have a permanent and one-going effect.
