Analysis and Design
15/11/2004

Universities, academic institutions, think tanks, the public service and the media are all concerned with analysis.

There is the belief that if you ‘know the situation’ then your behaviour will be appropriate.

This is a mistaken and dangerous belief.

You can analyse the past but you have to design the future.

At best analysis can lead to the application of the appropriate standard response. But there are many situations which need a new response. That is where design comes in. There is a need to design a way forward.

The thinking involved in design is very different from the thinking involved in analysis.

Analysis is concerned with ‘what is’.

Design is concern with ‘what can be’.

One of the purposes of the World Centre for is to emphasise the importance of design and to facilitate the design process in different situations.
